Golf
Greetings,
My oh my, we have an exciting golf schedule this year. The competition is fierce and hopefully will prepare us for the Alabama High School Athletic Association events next year.
When I planned the schedule, I really considered classroom instruction as a priority and tried to minimize absence from schoolwork, while at the same time trying to get as much tournament play as possible for our “A” team. In fact, I arranged some scrimmages against the other team I help coach, the Spring Hill Badgers plus other teams outside the AISA to get our “A” team as much competition as possible.
One thing we did this year is make an agreement with Faith to have our younger (and/or newer) players competing with each other at 4 PM on the Short course (par 3) at Magnolia Grove. They should not need to leave school early as they can get there by 3:30 PM and warm up.
Of course, a few middle school players are extremely talented in golf (Gabi Oubré and Cody Wyatt) and will probably be on the “A” team the entire season (they will have earlier starting times for local tournaments and will travel to away tournaments).
The three teams “A, B, and C” will have dynamic rosters according to how one played the previous week. Therefore, I will attempt to get the ever-changing roster posted weekly on the school’s website. If there is any doubt if a student really needs early dismissal, please call me (402-1798 cell).

Bergoon wins AISA state golf tournament!!!
Warriors Golf team takes second at state in the team competition!
On April 28th and 29th your Cottage Hill Warrior golf team finished their season like champions. Their two day total was 623 narrowly missing a chance to win the state title won by Lee-Scott.
The good news is almost everyone is returning for next year. Our lone senior Andy Davis will be greatly missed. Andy improved tremendously during his three years on the golf team and always had a great attitude.
The most exciting part of the two days was watching Jr. Andrew Bergoon come home with the individual state title. He shot a one over 73 on the first day and a two over 74 the second day to finish the tournament at 3 over par and claim the individual state title. He defeated several great golfers including two who are rated in the top ten in the state. Entering the second day only one stroke back Andrew pulled away from the competition by playing steady golf and making very few mental errors. While other talented golfers were succumbing to the pressure and falling apart Andrew maintained his poise and stayed focus despite some adversity coming down the stretch. He double bogeyed number 17 and gave a ray of hope to his competitors only to regroup and finish with a solid par on 18 and claim the prestigious title of state champ.
Congratulations Andrew Bergoon.
Jr. John Lawson had an unbelievable round going on Monday but found some difficulty on the last three holes. Still he shot an outstanding 79 on the first day. The second day John played a key role in our comeback to help our team take second. He shot a 75 and helped erase a twelve stroke deficit to Pike. John finished in 6th place out of 120 golfers! Adam Spiller showed a great amount of maturity in dealing with a difficult situation. After being disqualified for missing his tee time which was not completely his fault. He responded the next day and helped Cottage Hill make their comeback run. Despite the previous day’s events Adam turned around and shot an outstanding 78 the next day to help his team. Finally 8th grader Gabi Oubre shot an 82 the first day and followed that up with a 78 the next day to give us four rounds in the 70’s on the second day. Cottage Hill shot a 305 on the second day which was by far the lowest team total of the day. We are so pleased with the effort the players gave and the way they conducted themselves in both adversity and in winning. Our only senior Andy Davis will be greatly missed his positive attitude was very contagious to his teammates and coaches. Other outstanding players to watch out for who played in the state tournament were: 8th grader Cody Wyatt who has only been playing for a year and is already shooting rounds in the 70’s in tournament conditions. 9th grader Tre Larsen has a beautiful swing and will be one of the best golfers in the area in years to come. He just needs experience. Jr basketball standout Austin Burch has a chance to be a great golfer as well. As you can see the future is bright for our golf program.

The CHCA golf teams played in three separate golf recently.
The “A” team (Gabi Oubré, Andrew Bergoon, John Lawson, Cody Wyatt, and Adam Spiller) plus our number one from the “B” team (Andy Davis – who played as an individual) traveled toMontgomeryto play in an eleven team tournament at Lagoon Park GC. They were fantastic and came in second place behind the best team in AISA right now, Lee Scott. Here are the details as I have them right now:

|
Our best “A” team score last year was 332. We have beaten our best score by 18 strokes. We believe by the end of April we can give Lee Scott a good run for the State Championship. Of course the “A” team qualified for state today by breaking 360! Congrats!

Congratulations Adam – great round of three over par! Congrats to all as you are finding your identity and improving daily.

CHCA’s “B” team took on the “A” team fromFaithAcademyat Magnolia Grove’s Crossings GC. These guys did so well for their second win in as many days. When they break the 360 mark (which is needed to qualify for the state championship), I am going to request that they be allowed to enter into the state championship competition on April 28 & 29. Sweet!

The “B” team accomplished this win without Andy Davis (who played as an individual at the Macon-East tournament). Although each of the top four players is capable of going much lower than what they shot today, they still did an awesome job of toppling Faith. Congrats to Montgomery Kennedy in his first ever tournament and first ever complete 18 holes. A 122 is a good start for the first time out and is better than my first outing.

The “C” team is awesome. All these players gave it their all and the competition was just as fierce as what the A & B teams faced, on a sliding scale. There were only six strokes separating our top finishers from our 5thplace score. I personally believe this is a tough tournament as the par 3 track is not an easy course. Congrats to all of you!
