Mu Alpha Theta

Mu Alpha Theta is a nationally recognized Math Honor Society that has a membership of over 75,000 students in 1,500 schools.  Mu Alpha Theta is dedicated to inspire keen interest in mathematics, to develope strong scholarship in the subject, and to promote the enjoyment of mathematics in high school.

The Mu Alpha Theta National High School and Junior College Mathematics Club were founded in 1957 by Dr. and Mrs. Richard V. Andree at the University of Oklahoma. In his words, Mu Alpha Theta is "an organization dedicated to promoting scholarship in mathematics and establishing math as an integral part of high school and junior college education." The name Mu Alpha Theta was constructed from the Greek lettering for the phonemes m, a, and th.

Here at Cottage Hill Christian Academy, our chapter of Mu Alpha Theta honors students for their achievement in mathematics and seeks to challenge our students to continue their hard work and dedication to math.  Students will be required to make all monthly meetings, participate in one service project each school year, continue to take more advanced math classes than previous years, and be eligible to compete with our math team.

Students who meet the all of following eligibility requirements should considered applying.  This organization is a nationally recognized Math Honor Society that distinguishes students for their achievement and may help the student apply to certain universities.  Students who meet the following eligibility requirements will be considered for induction into our local charter of Mu Alpha Theta:

  • Students in the 11th and 12th grade, who have completed the equivalent of four semesters of college preparatory mathematics and in addition have completed or are currently enrolled in a still more advanced course.
  • Students must continue to take more advanced math courses from year to year here at Cottage Hill Christian Academy.
  • Students completing an overall non-weighted 3.5 grade point average in math are eligible for full membership providing their mathematical work was done with distinction.
  • There is a national membership fee of five dollars (to be turned in with application).
  • Completion of Mu Alph Theta Application

All applications and fees are due Thursday August 23.
A letter will be sent at a later date for an Initiation Ceremony.

If you have questions, please see Coach Swagart.  It is an honor to be part of something that distinguishes you for your hard work, your dedication, and desire to become better.

Sincerely,

Joe Swagart
