AHSAA accepts Warriors, Rams

Faith Academy, Cottage Hill Christian set to compete in the 2008-09 season
Thursday, September 20, 2007
By MIKE HERNDON
Sports Reporter
Faith Academy and Cottage Hill Christian, the Alabama Independent School Association's two largest schools and the only two AISA programs in Mobile, have been accepted for membership into the Alabama High School Athletic Association.
Athletics directors Woodie Head of Faith and Joe Downey of Cottage Hill both confirmed Wednesday that their schools have received letters of acceptance from the AHSAA. Head said Faith, by far the largest AISA school with more than double the enrollment of No. 2 Cottage Hill, expects to be placed in Class 5A while Downey said CHCA should land in Class 3A.
Their memberships will begin in the 2008-09 school year, which is a reclassification year in the AHSAA.
Both Head and Downey said travel and scheduling were the main reasons for the move. Downey said the Rams and Warriors are having to play three junior varsity football games against each other this season in order to fill a schedule.
"It's hard for us being the only two AISA teams (in Mobile)," Downey said. "It's hard to get people to come down and play us, especially in spring sports. Our kids would have to miss a whole day of school to go up to Montgomery or Selma. We feel like now we can schedule teams around here."
The closest AISA programs to Mobile are in Jackson and the Atmore area, but both of those are in a smaller classification. The closest comparably sized AISA programs to Mobile are in Grove Hill and Monroeville.
Head said that once Mobile Christian left the AISA to join the AHSAA as a Class 3A program in 2006, Faith and Cottage Hill both understood that if either one decided to make the switch, the other would have to follow.
"Cottage Hill at least left us one local team to play," said Head. "With Mobile Christian and Cottage Hill both leaving, our closest game would be about 90 miles away. We had a mutual agreement with them that if one decided to look at leaving, they would let the other one know."
Head said Faith coaches are confident they can compete at the 5A level, where they will play against Williamson, Vigor, St. Paul's and B.C. Rain. The AHSAA places an enrollment multiplier of 1.35 on private schools for classification purposes, although Faith -- which according to AISA records has an enrollment of 469 in grades 8-11 -- likely would have been a 5A school even without the multiplier.
"We think it's going to be a good move for our school," said Head. "Overall, I think there will be some sports where we're going to have to tighten our belts and work a little harder. In other sports, we'll be OK."
AHSAA executive director Steve Savarese said the association welcomes its two new schools. "We look forward to having them as new members of our association," he said Wednesday. "We like having the kids under us and we think they're in a great association."

Senior Trip Update

I’m excited to announce that our seniors will have an opportunity to take part in Cottage Hill Christian Academy’s second annual trip to Europe. Last year we took 17 people from the Academy for this once-in-life-time trip. The dates for the trip are May 25- June 5, 2008. The trip will include the cities of Paris and Rome. Day trips will be Normandy Beach (site of D-Day), Versailles, and Venice. Our trip will depart from Mobile on Sunday, May 25 to Paris and we will return to Mobile on Thursday, June 5 from Rome, Italy.

The trip cost will be $2400.00 which will include round trip air transportation from Mobile, Euro Rail (ground transportation), room, all meals ($20.00 a day) and insurance. Any shopping or other expenses would need to be covered by your students as we come closer to the trip dates we will be studying more about the locations we will visit so your student will have a good understanding of the places they will experience.

This year we will take 25 students and adults from the Academy. Check back to this web site while our students are on the trip as we will be blogging online about our adventures! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me via email @ hughest@chbss.org <mailto:hughest@chbss.org> or at the school at 634-2513.

Please be in prayer for our students as they take part in this incredible life learning experience.

Blessings,

Breaking News

January 10, 2008

Head Football Coach Rusty Mason addressed the Varsity and J.V. Football players to inform them of his decision to leave Cottage Hill Christian Academy to take a position at Faith Academy.

We sadly accept his resignation and wish him and his family the best. He has truly been a blessing here at CHCA as a teacher and coach. He has built a strong and competitive football program here at the Academy and we will work hard to keep it at this level.

The search has started for his replacement. Any interested candidates should contact me at downeyj@chbss.org or our principal, Tim Anderson at andersont@chbss.org  or call 251-634-2513.

Yours truly,
Coach Joe A. Downey
Athletic Director, Cottage Hill Christian Academy

To Players and Parents

Dear Players and Parents,

I want to sincerely thank you for allowing me the opportunity to work with you these past three years.  We have made considerable progress in our football program.  We have laid the ground-work for many successful years to come.  I would like to thank the administration for giving me an opportunity to invest in the lives of our players and to be a small part of their life.

I want to thank our coaches for their time and effort.  This has been an extremely successful season, one which can be built upon.  My prayer is that our players will continue to work hard in the off-season and develop themselves in the summer.  My family wishes you much success.

In Christ,

Coach Mason

We are happy to announce that we have a highly qualified and experienced teacher to replace her. Mrs. Wanda Pedersen comes to us with 19 years of teaching experience in both public and Christian schools. She has sponsored science fairs and competitions. Mrs. Pederson also has extensive experience as a chemist in the industry. In addition to her experience, Mrs. Pederson has a master's degree and additional hours from the University of West Georgia.

We are very thankful to have found such an outstanding teacher to continue the excellent work done by Mrs. Rios.

Scholar Bowl

Academy Sets Record Enrollment

“Cottage Hill Christian Academy looks to kick off its eleventh year of operation with a record enrollment,”says Superintendent Dr. Chuck Lang. Enrollment at the Academy is up 30 students over the 2006-07 school year with a total enrollment at 235. Over all enrollment in the entire Cottage Hill Baptist School system is also setting records with record enrollment at the middle school campus bringing total school system enrollment to 670.

“Excitement is building at all levels as we look to begin the new school year,”says Lang.  Adding to the excitement is the arrival of a new principal, Tim Anderson, and return of Athletic Director/Dean of Students, Joe Downey and Communications/ Student Leadership Institute Director, Tommy Hughes.

Mr. Tim Anderson comes to the Academy from East Central High School in Hurley, Mississippi where he served for 22 years. Mr. Anderson brings a tremendous amount of experience as principal and administrator. He graduated from Southern Mississippi with a bachelor’s degree and Masters from Pepperdine University in Southern California. Mr. Anderson also spent 26 years concurrent service in the US Military on active Reserves.

Mr. Joe Downey returns for his second year as Athletic Director/Dean of Students. Mr. Downey has served in coaching positions at Theodore HS, Mobile Christian and Cottage Hill. He is a graduate of Florida State University where he played football for the Seminoles. He also played professional football before beginning his high school coaching career.

Serving for eight years with the International Mission Board in Western Europe and Central Asia, Mr. Tommy Hughes serves at the Academy as Director of Communications/Spiritual Development and as Director of the Cottage Hill Student
Leadership Institute. He and his wife are currently on a leave of absence from the IMB. He previously served ten years as the Electronic Media Director at the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions in Montgomery and three years as a producer at the
Southern Baptist Radio and Television Commission (North American Mission Board.) Hughes is a graduate of Mobile College (University of Mobile) and received his Masters from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas.

Dr. Lang, who began his duties with the Cottage Hill system in 1997, was instrumental in the establishment of the Academy. He will continue to serve the school system as Superintendent where his duties will focus on overall administration of the Cottage Hill Baptist School System and on its development.

Power Ball!!!

Nope! We’re not talking about a state lottery or the opening of a new casino in Mississippi, but we are talking about the 2007 Lady Warrior’s Volleyball team. This year the Lady Warriors look to return and defend their nearly perfect 2006 State
Championship season.
This year’s team returns all but two starters and looks to march through another season of dominating their opponents. “We return a very strong team with a great deal of experience,”states Head Coach Jennifer Newton. “Another plus is that we have a very strong bench.”If this year’s team is anything like the team Coach Newton put on the court last year, fans can look for a team that is well coached and disciplined. It is that discipline that took the Lady Warriors to area championship and to eventually bring home the state championship trophy.
Coach Newton says, “It won’t be an easy year as every one will be shooting to knock off this team.”One such team will be the Faith Academy Lady Rams who only won one game over last years Lady Warriors. “The Lady Rams will be out to do all they can to beat us. We will have to be focused, in great shape and disciplined. One other factor adding to a winning season is our fan base. The fans last year were incredible with crowds and energy rivaling that of Warrior Basketball games,”says Newton.
“Perhaps the key for this team is to keep in mind who we play for…it’s not about winning but about giving God the honor and glory no matter the outcome of our season. Win or lose we will praise Him and try to bring Him glory.”

Where Did the Hill Go?

If you have not been on the Academy campus all summer, chances are you are asking the same question. Visitors, students, and alumni alike have likely been wondering what is going on at CHCA. Upon arrival on the campus, a change is definitely noticed. What was once dubbed as “the hill,”or the underclassman parking lot, is now no more. Shortly after the close of the 2006-07 school year, bulldozers and heavy earth moving equipment began arriving to make their mark on our school
campus.

The transformation of the hill is to make way for additional parking and the much-anticipated addition to the Academy athletic complex. The new sports field will serve as a multipurpose facility that will host various athletic events such as soccer and eventually a track complex. The new facility will be fully sodded and have a full underground sprinkler system. The facility will be terraced with two separate parking areas. The first area will be at the level of the existing parking area with 150 spaces and the second will include thirty-five places on the level of the sports field. Both areas will be lighted. Also included in the work is site preparation for future buildings at Cottage Hill.
